Artificial turf is an alternative playing surface for sports that are traditionally played on natural turf. The first artificial turfs appeared in the United States in the 1970s. Closer to carpet than to turf, these "Nylon" polyamide finishes provide an abysmal playing comfort, without counting the risks of burns and of injuries of all kinds. Progressively, from innovation to innovation, FieldTurf Tarkett has developed products to suit the requirements of various sports and, especially, Field Hockey.

Starting in 1998, FieldTurf Tarkett developed its first so-called "new generation" artificial turfs. Characterised by longer fibres (min 50 mm), with mixed loads, sands and recycled rubber granules, these finishes provide playing characteristics that are very close to those of the best regularly-maintained natural turf.

Polyurethane resin can be used to construct athletics tracks and sports pitches.
